SUMMARY

The following article discusses how styles are converted between Microsoft Word for the Macintosh and Aldus Pagemaker for the Macintosh.

MORE INFORMATION

According to the “PageMaker Version 4.0 Reference Manual,” Aldus PageMaker for the Macintosh can import styles from Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, and 4.0. This is also true of PageMaker 4.0’s new conversion filter for Word for the Macintosh version 5.0. However, only those styles used to format the document are actually imported. Styles that have been defined, but not applied to the document being opened, are not imported.

When you open a Word document in PageMaker, make sure you select Retain Format in the Place dialog box. Otherwise, the Word styles will not be added to PageMaker’s style list.

However, some formatting in Word cannot be imported into PageMaker (for example, Keep With Next Line and Underline), so some of Word’s style definitions may not carry over to a PageMaker document.

Styles created in PageMaker also export to Word when PageMaker’s Export command is used. Once you open the exported document in Word, you can edit the styles in the same manner as any other Word styles.
