SUMMARY
When you have multiple paragraphs selected, and all do not have the same style applied to them, the style of the first paragraph in the selection is listed in the style box in the lower-left corner of the window and in the style-combination box on the ruler.
If you redefine that style based on the selection by using the style-combination box on the ruler, that style is applied to all paragraphs in the selection.
