File: Sorting of Numbers in a Text Field

Q41511

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft File, versions 1.0, 1.01, 1.02, 1.04, 1.05, 2.0

Records may not sort as expected when you perform a Sort on a Microsoft File data file using a field that contains numbers. For example, the record that contains the number 100 may end up before the record that contains the number 99.

This error may occur because the field that contains these numbers is a Text field. The contents of a Text field are sorted or compared one character at a time. For example, 9 is greater than 1, so 99 is considered to be greater than 100.

Additional query words: datafile 1.00 1.01 1.02 1.04 1.05 2.00
