Excel 1.x: Printing Formulas Longer than 108 Characters

Last reviewed: October 31, 1994
Article ID: Q41048

SUMMARY

The limit of the cell width in Excel versions earlier than 2.20 is 108 when you are using the default font and font size.

In Excel version 2.20, the limit of the cell width is 255, which is also the maximum number of characters in a cell. To print formulas longer than 108 characters in versions of Excel earlier than 2.20, try one of the following methods:

  1. Enter the formula as text by deleting the "=" in front of the formula, and then the text will flow into all necessary EMPTY cells to the right.
  2. Try using Print Reduction (in the Page Setup dialog box). The column width may not get reduced as much as the text in the cells.
