PSS ID Number: Q40752 Article last modified on 03-07-1997

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, if you choose Page Setup from the File menu, click the Document button, and select Bottom Of Page in the Footnotes dialog box, the footnotes (automatic or manual) force the text to a new page after the next section break.

CAUSE

This feature is necessary to ensure that the footnote is placed on the same page as the reference.

For example, Word cannot place footnotes from different sections at the bottom of the same page if a document has two sections on a single page.

Choosing the placement option Beneath Text, End Of Section, or End Of Document does not produce this effect.

STATUS

This functionality has changed in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh.
