Summary: The error message “OPEN FAIL: Prog.CBL 53-U” is displayed when the COBOL compiler cannot find the specified source code. This error can commonly occur under the following three circumstances: 1. The extension is not .CBL or as specified in COBOL.DIR with the OSEXT“xxx” directive. 2. The name is misspelled. 3. The source file is not in the specified drive or path. This error number and message needs to be added to the error list in the “Microsoft COBOL Version 3.0: Error Messages Manual.”
