SUMMARY

To insert a new column in an existing table created with the Insert Table command, follow the procedure below that corresponds to your version of Word.

Word Versions 5.0 and 5.1

  1. Position the insertion point anywhere in the column to the right of where the new column is to be inserted.
  2. From the Format menu, choose Table Layout.
  3. Select the Column option button.
  4. Click the Insert button.

To insert more than one column at a time, select two or more columns in the table (in one or more rows) and follow the steps above.

To add a column to the right of the rightmost column, follow these steps:

  1. Click to the right of the table to place the insertion point just after the rightmost column (that is, where the end-of-row markers appear in Show Paragraph mode).
  2. From the Format menu, choose Table Layout.
  3. Select the Column option button.
  4. Click the Insert button.

Word Version 4.0

  1. Position the insertion point anywhere in the column to the right of where the new column is to be inserted.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Table.
  3. Select the Column option button.
  4. Click the Insert button.

MORE INFORMATION

Page 366 of the “Reference to Microsoft Word” manual for version 4.0 incorrectly states that to insert a column in a table, the insertion point should be in the column to the left of where the column is to be inserted.

The manual should have stated that the insertion point should be positioned to the right (not left) of where the new column is to be inserted.
