The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.1

SUMMARY

If a table is the first item in a Microsoft Word for the Macintosh document and you want to insert text before the table (not to be included in the first cell), use the Insert Paragraph Above Row command as follows:

  1. Position the insertion point anywhere in the first row of the table.
  2. Press COMMAND+OPTION+SPACEBAR.

This command can also be used to break a table into two separate tables by positioning the insertion point just below where the table is to be split before executing the command.

System 7.1

System 7.1 automatically installs the “U.S.-System 6” keyboard layout. You must remove this layout if you want the COMMAND+OPTION+SPACEBAR key combination to function in Word for the Macintosh.

Use the following steps to remove the “U.S.-System 6” keyboard layout:

  1. Open the keyboard control panel from the Control Panels folder. You may have two options: “U.S.” or “U.S.-System 6”.
  2. Quit all open applications.
  3. Select the “U.S.” keyboard layout and close the keyboard control panel.
  4. Open the System Suitcase in the System folder.
  5. Drag the “U.S.-System 6” keyboard layout out of the System Suitcase.

The keyboard shortcut will now work correctly in Word. You do not have to restart the Macintosh.

STATUS

In Word version 6.0 a line can be inserted before a table as the first thing in the document by, simply pressing Enter in the first cell of the Table.
