Copying an Existing Style to Another Style

SUMMARY

You can use the Copy and Paste commands while in the Define Styles dialog box to copy a style’s formatting instructions to another style. You can also copy formatting from a selected paragraph and then paste it into another style. You then can modify the copied formatting instructions as you wish.

To copy a different style’s formatting instructions to another style, do the following:

  1. From the Format menu, choose Define Styles.
  2. From the list box, select the style with the formatting instructions you want to copy.
  3. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
  4. Select the style to which you want to paste the formatting instructions or choose New Style to create a new style.
  5. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.
  6. Change or add to the style’s formatting instructions as needed.
  7. Click OK, Define, or Apply to accept the copied style, or click Cancel to retain the current style.

To copy a style’s formatting instructions from the selected paragraph, do the following:

  1. Select the paragraph with the style you want to copy.
  2. From the Format menu, choose Define Styles. Word automatically copies the formatting instructions for the selected paragraph.
  3. Select the style to which you want to paste the formatting instructions, or choose New Style to create a new style.
  4. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.
  5. Change or add to the style’s formatting instructions as needed.
