- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

Pages 19-20 of the “Getting Started with Microsoft Word” manual for version 4.0 give incorrect instructions for setting up two 800K disks to run the program on a two-drive system. The error occurs in setting up the program disk: the program itself is too large to allow all the other files listed to fit on the same disk.

If you have a Macintosh with two 800K drives, it is best to use two disks to run the program, as follows:

  1. A System disk to start your Macintosh and to store your documents. Use the earliest and simplest (that is, few desk accessories, INITs, and fonts) system compatible with your computer to save room.
  2. A disk containing the Word program.

The Standard Glossary, Word Help, Word Command Help, and Word Hyphenation file should be placed in either the System Folder on the first disk or the same folder as Word on the second disk. There will not be room to put them all on the same disk.

If these files will not all fit on either disk, a third disk may need to be set up and swap disks when those files are needed.

The MS Dictionary will have to be placed in the System Folder on the Startup (System) disk or on a third disk because it will not fit on the same disk as the Word application.
