The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, only the words in the current selection will be counted if text is selected prior to choosing the Word Count command from the Utilities menu.

If no text is selected, the Word Count value refers to the entire document.

If text is formatted as Hidden and the current Preference is set to not Show Hidden Text, Word Count will not count the Words and Lines. Word Count will always count the Characters and Paragraphs which are formatted as Hidden, regardless of how the Show Hidden Text Preference is set.

MORE INFORMATION

In Word verson 4.0, Preferences is available from the Edit menu. In Word versions 5.0 and 5.1, Show Hidden Text can be found by choosing Preferences from the Tools menu and then clicking on the View icon. Using Hidden as a character format is done by choosing Character from the Format menu under both all versions.
