Changing Underline Thickness on PostScript Printer

SUMMARY

When using Microsoft Word versions 5.00 and 5.50, there is no way to change underline width on a PostScript printer. This is because a relative underline height is used instead of a fixed-height underline. Relative underline height is used so that the underline used with a thick font is thicker than the one used with a normal font.

In Word version 4.00, it is possible to change the width of the underline for a printer that supports PostScript. However, making this modification to the INI file changes the width for all underlines in the entire file that is printed.

POSTSCRP.INI/POSTSCRL.INI are text files that can be loaded directly into Word. Search on the three characters “/ul” or scroll down to line 189 of the file.

The following line

/ul {gsave /y exch def /dbl exch def 2 copy .2 setlinewidth

is changed to the following, where the “#” should be replaced with the width of the desired underline in units of points (72 points = 1 inch):

/ul {gsave /y exch def /dbl exch def 2 copy .# setlinewidth

After making the above change, save the file, turn the printer off, and then turn it on again to reset it.
