SUMMARY

Special characters can be inserted using the Insert Special command from the Edit menu. When you select an option from the dialog box, Works inserts that special character at the cursor when you press ENTER.

MORE INFORMATION

You can also insert any of the following special characters with their corresponding shortcut keys:

An end-of-line mark (SHIFT+ENTER) inserts an end-of-line mark and starts a new line, but not a new paragraph.

A manual page break (CTRL+ENTER) inserts a page break mark and starts a new page.

An optional hyphen (CTRL+HYPHEN) inserts an optional hyphen. This lets you designate words that can be hyphenated when they occur at the end of a line. An optional hyphen is visible only when Show All Characters is on or when the word is hyphenated at the end of a line.

A nonbreaking hyphen (CTRL+SHIFT+HYPHEN) inserts a nonbreaking hyphen. This keeps two words that must be separated by a hyphen from breaking at the end of a line. On the screen, the nonbreaking hyphen looks identical to a regular hyphen.

A nonbreaking space (CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR) inserts a nonbreaking space. This keeps two words that must stay together, such as a first name and last name, from being separated at the end of a line. On the screen, the nonbreaking space appears as a regular space.

A print page (CTRL+P) inserts the page number placeholder, page. Works inserts the page number when you print the file.

A print file (CTRL+F) inserts the filename placeholder, filename. Works inserts the filename when you print the file.

A print date (CTRL+D) inserts the date placeholder, date. Works inserts the current date when you print the file.

A print time (CTRL+T) inserts the time placeholder, time. Works inserts the current time when you print the file.

A current date (CTRL+;) inserts the current date.

A current time (CTRL+SHIFT+;) inserts the current time.
