SUMMARY
Word version 5.00 can account for blank space when counting lines. When the Options “count blank space:” field is set to Yes, Word counts the blank space before and after a paragraph, as well as the blank space associated with paragraph line spacing. The top margin is counted in the line count. The line count may not always be an integer. For example, if paragraph line spacing is set at 1.5 lines, the line counter will count 1, 2.5, 4, 5.5, etc.
This is the same for Word 5.50 when the View Preferences “Count Blank Space” option is checked.
If the document has not been paginated, the line count may exceed the number of lines that normally fit on a page (66 on an 11-inch page). The largest number displayed is 999.
If the Options “show layout:” field is set to No, columns and side-by-side paragraphs are counted sequentially, in the order in which they appear on the screen. If Show Layout is turned on, the line count restarts at the same number as at the top of the corresponding column or paragraph to the left. For example, with newspaper-style columns, the first line of the second column has the same number as the first line of the first column.
This is the same for Word 5.50 when the View Layout option is chosen.
