Summary:

Rich Text Format (RTF) is a standard for moving document files between different applications. With RTF, text can be transferred from one application to another without significant loss of formatting. Consequently, developers can save documents in one format, and know that other applications can read this format.

The RTF conversion programs (WORD_RTF.EXE in Word 4.00 and RTF_DOS.EXE and RTF_OS2.EXE in Word 5.00) create a standard format for interchange of text regardless of application, system, or operating environment. Text and format instructions are saved in 7-bit ASCII format, which can be easily read, translated into other application formats, and sent over virtually any communications link.

The RTF conversion programs are RTF_DOS.EXE, RTF_OS2.EXE, and WORK_RTF.EXE in Word 5.50.

The coding information for the RTF format is contained in an application note titled “RTF File Format Specification,” which is available by calling Microsoft Product Support Services at (206) 454-2030.
