HIMEM.SYS Doesn’t Work in OS/2’s 3.x Box or Windows/386 PSS ID Number: Q35681 Article last modified on 01-05-1989

MS-DOS

Summary:

Currently, HIMEM.SYS will not work in OS/2’s DOS compatibility box (also known as the “3.x box” or the “DOS box”). This feature is under review and will be considered for inclusion in a future release.

Windows/386 has built-in support of the High Memory Area. It does not use the XMS API contained in the XMS device driver HIMEM.SYS. However, since Windows/386 is running in virtual 8086 mode and taking over all of extended memory to perform its own memory management between tasks, the XMS API is not available to programs running under Windows/386. Ultimately, it would be beneficial if each program running under Windows/386 could have access to the XMS API. This feature is also under review and will be considered for inclusion in a future release.
