SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word for Windows, if you use underline formatting, the underline intersects some text characters (such as commas and letters that descend below the base line).

WORKAROUND

You can use the following methods to control the height of an underline:

  - Apply Border Below formatting using the Paragraph command. This
    procedure places an underline beneath the entire paragraph, not
    just a specific section of the paragraph. This method produces a
    thick underline.

Construct a formula sequence that places a bottom border under the necessary characters using the Box formula command. This method produces a thick underline.
Construct a formula sequence that overstrikes each of the necessary characters with a subscripted underscore character using the Overstrike formula command.
