Summary:
To delete all automatic footnotes in a Microsoft Word for Windows document, you must search for “^2” (without the quotation marks), and replace with these with blank entries. The symbol ^2 is the internal symbol for an automatic footnote reference. To delete all automatic footnote references, use the following steps:
- Position the insertion point at the beginning of your document.
- From the Edit menu, choose Replace.
- Type “^2” (without the quotation marks) in the Find What box in version 2.0, or the Search For: box in version 1.X. (The caret symbol is produced by pressing SHIFT+6).
- Leave the Replace With box empty (or delete any contents).
- In Word for Windows version 1.x, clear the Confirm Changes check box, and choose the OK button. In Word for Windows version 2.0, select the Replace All option.
