Summary:

To delete all automatic footnotes in a Microsoft Word for Windows document, you must search for “^2” (without the quotation marks), and replace with these with blank entries. The symbol ^2 is the internal symbol for an automatic footnote reference. To delete all automatic footnote references, use the following steps:

  1. Position the insertion point at the beginning of your document.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Replace.
  3. Type “^2” (without the quotation marks) in the Find What box in version 2.0, or the Search For: box in version 1.X. (The caret symbol is produced by pressing SHIFT+6).
  4. Leave the Replace With box empty (or delete any contents).
  5. In Word for Windows version 1.x, clear the Confirm Changes check box, and choose the OK button. In Word for Windows version 2.0, select the Replace All option.
