SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft PowerPoint, when you start a presentation that includes slides with shaded backgrounds or slides that use many palette colors, the desktop colors may be altered. Usually, this behavior is noticeable because the desktop takes on the color of the slide background.
CAUSE
When you use 8-bit color video cards on the Macintosh, only 256 colors can be displayed on the screen at a time. When the PowerPoint presentation is opened, the Color Lookup Table for the current slide sets the 256 colors that can be displayed. The desktop must take its colors from these 256 colors. When the next slide becomes active, the Color Lookup Table for that slide sets the current 256 colors.
RESOLUTION
If your computer has the capability, you can eliminate this problem by setting the color depth to Thousands or Millions in the Monitors control panel. The settings have a large enough color palette so that the PowerPoint colors will not interfere with colors used for the desktop.
