Calculating a Column That Includes Hyphens as Line Separators

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

An incorrect result occurs when performing a math calculation on a column or table that includes a row of hyphens (——) to separate numbers or groups of numbers. For example:

            100.00
             25.00
           --------
             35.00
             40.00
           =========

Sum Total 135.00 (Incorrect)

If the line of hyphens is included in the selected column of numbers, it will act as a minus sign and subtract the number immediately following the row of hyphens.

Workaround

You can work around this problem by formatting the row of hyphens as hidden text, then setting Show Hidden Text to “No” in the Windows Options menu. The math calculation will then be correct. The lines can be viewed again by setting Show Hidden Text back to “Yes” in the Windows Options menu.

In Word Version 5.50 the show hidden text command has been moved to the View Preferences command.
