SUMMARY
In Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 3.x and 4.0, it is not possible to delete an unopened file, eject a disk, or unmount a network drive when a piece of that file has been Cut or Copied to the Clipboard.
When trying to delete an unopened file in this condition, the following error message is presented:
That item is locked or in use and can’t be removed.
Word maintains a link to a file that a Copy or Cut has been performed on, even when the file is closed. To clear the Clipboard so that the file can be deleted, the disk can be ejected, or the network drive can be unmounted, do the following:
- Open another file or create a new document by choosing New from the File menu.
- Select some existing text, or type in some text and select it.
- From the Edit menu, choose Copy (or Cut).
- From the Edit menu, choose Paste.
- From the File menu, choose Save (in the case of using a New document, you must give the new file a name).
MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft Word has a Delete command on the File menu (full menus only). The Delete command allows you to delete a selected file from within Microsoft Word. Any file should display in the list box except for documents that are open in Microsoft Word at the time you choose the Delete command.
