Descenders Touch Border Below Paragraph Format

Article ID: Q34883
Creation Date: 26-AUG-1988
Revision Date: 10-SEP-1996 The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0

SUMMARY

When a border is placed below a paragraph in Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, characters with descenders touch the line.

To correct this problem, modify Paragraph Spacing After to create a buffer between the paragraph underline and the character descenders in the paragraph. From the menu, choose Format, then Paragraph, and set Spacing After to "1 pt" or "2 pt" (without the quotation marks). This setting will create a buffer of space between the end of a paragraph and a border underline, distancing the character descenders from the border underline.
