If two tabs are placed close (1/16 inch) to one another on the ruler, the desired or expected spacing may not appear. For example, on one line, two such tabs may give one spacing, while on another line with different margins, similarly placed tabs give different spacing.

This situation occurs because a rounding routine determines the placement of text to the next tab on the ruler. Text on one line may round to less than the next 16th inch; while on another line with a different margin, similarly placed tabs may round to more than the next 16th inch, placing the text following the tab at the next tab on the ruler.
A workaround for this situation is to choose either centimeters or picas under the Preferences command in the Edit menu. These measurements contain more spaces per inch, so that the same rounding routines result in much more accurate tab placement on the ruler.
