IF Instruction Incorrectly Tests MM/DD/YYYY Date Format

SUMMARY
When using dates in an IF instruction in a print merge or macro, such as <<IF date1>date2>>, Page 341 of the Version 4.00 “Using Microsoft Word” manual states that fields containing numbers in the MM/DD/YY or MM/DD/YYYY format where the separator is a slash (/), hyphen (-), or period (.) are treated as dates. However, only the first two digits of the YYYY portion of the date are used in the conditional test; therefore, the test is only accurate with the date format of MM/DD/YY, not MM/DD/YYYY, as stated in the documentation.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Word Version 4.00. This problem was corrected in Word Version 5.00, where either date format, MM/DD/YY or MM/DD/YYYY, may be used.
