SYMPTOMS
When your Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE) client computer starts, you may receive the following error message:
You may also receive additional error messages, depending on the PXE basic input/output system (BIOS) of the computer or network adapter.
CAUSE
This issue may occur if the Remote Installation Service (RIS) server is multihomed (if the server either has multiple network adapters or multiple static IP addresses are configured for a single network adapter).
Note Microsoft does not recommend that you run the RIS service on a multihomed server.
WORKAROUND
Although Microsoft does not recommend that you run the RIS service on a multihomed server, you may be able to work around this issue. For a multihomed RIS server to work, the following conditions must be true:
- The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service is installed on the RIS server.
- Scopes are defined on the DHCP server.
- The DHCP server scopes are active.
Note When you run the RIS service on a multihomed server, you may experience the following issues:
- When you authorize a multihomed RIS server, you must either authorize each IP address or use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN). If you perform authorization by using only the NetBIOS name, you may experience additional issues.
- A PXE client may display an error message similar to the following:

- If you install RIS and DHCP on the same server and the RIS client is across a router, the RIS client may be unable to obtain an IP address during the PXE boot. The RIS client may receive a DHCP offer of all zeros. The RIS client may work correctly if you move the RIS service and DHCP service to separate computers or if you remove the router.
