SUMMARY

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Word 2002 Service Pack 2 (SP2). This update prevents users from unintentionally updating links to external data in Microsoft Word documents or e-mail messages that use Word as the e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook. Additionally, this update corrects other issues in Microsoft Word 2002 SP2.

How to Download and Install the Update

IMPORTANT: The installation of the Word 2002 SP2 update: October 16, 2002 that is described in this article requires that your version of Microsoft Windows Installer be 2.0 or later. For additional information about this requirement, see the "Windows Installer 2.0 Update Requirements" section of this article.

Client Update

If you installed Word from a CD-ROM, you have the following two options:

  • Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all the latest updates that includes all available service packs and public updates.
  • Install only the Word 2002 update, by following the steps described later in this article.

NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you install the client update by using the Office Product Updates Web site. The Office Product Updates Web site detects your particular installation of Microsoft Office and prompts you to install exactly what you need to make sure that your Office installation is completely up-to-date.

Office Product Updates Web Site

To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates, you must install it on your computer. For more information about how to install the Office Product Updates Web site, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install Only the Word 2002 SP2 update: October 16, 2002

Follow these steps to download and install the client update:

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click Save to save the Wrd1005.exe file to the selected folder.
  3. In Windows Explorer, double-click wrd1005.exe.
  4. Click Yes if you receive a prompt to install the update.
  5. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  6. Insert your Office CD-ROM if prompted to do so, and then click OK.
  7. When you receive a message that indicates the installation was successful, click OK.

NOTE: After you install the Word 2002 SP2 update: October 16, 2002, you cannot remove it. The Word 2002 SP2 update: October 16, 2002 changes the default behavior of some Word fields. If you want the Word fields to behave as they did before you installed the Word 2002 SP2 update: October 16, 2002, set the FieldCalcSecurityLevel registry key to 0. Administrative Update

NOTE: Before you install the administrative update by using the steps in this article, verify that your administrative installation point has Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 or Office XP SP2 installed. If you installed Microsoft Word 2002 from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the administrative update:

  1. Locate the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Download the file to your desktop.
  3. In Windows Explorer, double-click wrd1005a.exe.
  4. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  5. In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\wrd1005a, and then click OK.
  6. Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
  7. If you are familiar with the procedure for updating your administrative installation, click Start, click Run, and then type the following command in the Open box

    msiexec /a Admin Path\MSI File /p C:\wrd1005a\MSP File SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE

    where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for your Office product (for example, C:\Word2002),

    where MSI File is the .msi database package for the Office product (for example, ProPlus.msi), and

    where MSP File is the name of the public administrative installation update (for example, WINWORDff.msp).
  8. To deploy the update on the client workstations, click Start, click Run, and then type the following command in the Open box

    msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=WORDFiles REINSTALLMODE=vomu

    where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and

    where MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi).

    NOTE: To reinstall all Microsoft Office XP components on the client computer, use REINSTALL=ALL.

How to Determine Whether the Update Is Installed

The Word 2002 SP2 update: October 16, 2002 only updates the Winword.exe file. Word 2002 SP2 update: October 16, 2002 updates the version of Microsoft Word 2002 that is installed on your computer to version 10.0.4524.0. In Word, click About Microsoft Word on the Help menu to determine the version of Word is on your computer.
