How to Manually Remove and Reinstall Microsoft Firewall Client on Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition

SUMMARY

If the Microsoft Firewall Client is not functioning and has been partially installed or partially removed, you may have to remove the Microsoft Firewall Client manually.

Manually remove the Firewall Client only after you have tried all the following methods:

  • Try the Repair option.
  • Try the Repair option in Add/Remove Programs.
  • Try to reinstall the Firewall Client over itself.

The following steps remove all related registry entries, folders, and files that exist as a result of the Firewall Client installation. Some of the following registry keys may not be in the registry on your computer; various keys are created and removed at different stages of the Firewall Client installation.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and then press ENTER. Look for and remove the following subkeys or values:
    • Remove 8A95A7C8EBA9A954A939802C184A2A46 from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Features\.
    • Remove 8A95A7C8EBA9A954A939802C184A2A46 from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\
    • Remove Firewall Client from HKEY_Current_USER\Software\Microsoft\.
    • Remove Firewall Client from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\.
    • Remove Firewall Client from HKEY_USERS\Software\Microsoft\.
    • Remove 8A95A7C8EBA9A954A939802C184A2A46 from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Installer\Features\.
    • 8A95A7C8EBA9A954A939802C184A2A46 from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Installer\Products\.
    • Remove 945E895D0A5100149B4B8D6E01A3DA26 from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Components\.
    • Remove 8A95A7C8EBA9A954A939802C184A2A46 from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Features\.
    • Remove the C"\Program Files\Microsoft Firewall Client value from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Folders\.
    • Remove the {8C7A59A8-9ABE-459A-9A93-08C281A4A264} Display Name value from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall .
  2. Restart Windows 98.
  3. At startup, you may receive the following error message:

    Windows is searching for ISATRAY.EXE. Problem with shortcut. The item 'ISATRAY.EXE' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved. The nearest match, based on size, date, and type, is 'C:\Program FilesPLUS\SYSAGENT.EXE'. Do you want this shortcut to point to this item?

  4. Click No.
  5. Find the Wspcpl32.cpl file in %Windir%\System. Delete this file to remove the Firewall Client icon in Control Panel.
  6. Click Start, click Run, and then type \\Server_name\mspclnt. Double-click Setup.exe.

    This starts the installation of the Firewall Client.
  7. Restart the computer when you are prompted. After you restart the computer, the Firewall Client is successfully installed.
