SYMPTOMS

If a Cisco router serves as a remote access server and if you use a Windows 2000-based client to dial this remote access server, you may receive error 718 (a time-out error) if a 145.x.x.x or 147.x.x.x static IP address pool is specified on the RAS server. But if an IP address pool is specified that does not include 145 or 147, the RAS client can successfully dial the RAS server.

CAUSE

The PPP stack does not support extended masking for data bytes. Therefore, a setting that is required by the Cisco server cannot be implemented for the connection, and the connection times out.
