SYMPTOMS
When you open a one-page template in Word 2002, the template may open as a two-page template.
CAUSE
This issue may occur when you open a Microsoft Word 97 for Windows template in Word 2002. Because of added features in Word (for example, nested tables and balloons for comments and revisions), Word 2002 must calculate the exact table row height on a cell-by-cell basis. Therefore, when the height of a table row is set as Exactly, Word calculates the height of the top border plus the height between the borders to equal the specified height of the table row.

WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- Start Word 2002.
- On the File menu, click Open, and then open the Word 97 template.
- If the template opens as two pages, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Compatibility tab, change the setting in the Recommended options for list to Microsoft Word 2002, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click Save to save the changes you made in step 3.
- On the File menu, click Close to close the template.
- On the File menu, click Open, and then open the Word 97 template. The template should now open as a one-page template.
Note This workaround may not work for all templates that were created in Word 97 for Windows.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Office XP Service Pack 3.
