SYMPTOMS

If you add a print separator page (.sep) file in the advanced properties of a printer, you may receive the following error message:

The separator page does not exist

CAUSE

The separator page file is not loaded if none of the file attributes are set. The printer tool expects one of the following attributes to be set:

  • read-only
  • archive
  • normal

The Windows 2000 Server products use advanced file attributes. If no attributes are set, the code that verifies the file attributes returns a "FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NOT_CONTENT_INDEXED" response. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional returns "FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL" because it does not use advanced file attributes.

When you install a Windows 2000 Server product, the separator files are installed with the archive attribute set. However, when you perform incremental backups, this attribute is reset.
