SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new presentation that is based on a design template in Microsoft PowerPoint, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Office PowerPoint can’t display the template used in this document. Microsoft Office PowerPoint cannot install the necessary files due to Windows Installer error 1605. This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.

After you click OK in the error message several times, the error message may go away. Additionally, the template may be applied successfully. However, you will receive the error message again when you restart PowerPoint and then apply the design template. This issue may also occur when you apply a design template to an existing presentation.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if registry keys that are generated by Microsoft Windows Installer are corrupted.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

  1. Close all Office Applications.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Select the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Components\B9BE92CC2CB71D119A12000A9CE1A22A
  4. On the File menu, click Export.
  5. Type a file name for your backup Registry file, and then click Save.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  7. Close Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

If Method 1 does not resolve the problem, use Method 2.

Method 2

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Back up all your data.
  2. Download and install the Microsoft Windows Installer Clean Up utility.

    For more information about how to download, install, and use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  3. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  4. Locate, and then expand the following registry key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products

  5. Click the first GUID under this registry key.
  6. In the right pane, double-click Product Name, and then write down the name of the product that is listed in the Value data box.
  7. Click OK to close the Edit String dialog box.
  8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 for each GUID in the list.
  9. Locate, and then expand the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products

  10. Click the first GUID in the list under this registry key.
  11. In the right pane, double-click Product Name, and then write down the name of the product that is listed in the Value data box.
  12. Click OK to close the Edit String dialog box.
  13. Repeat steps 10 through 12 for each GUID in the list.
  14. Examine the list of product names that you created in steps 6 and 11, and then verify that you have the media or Web sites available that you must have to reinstall the products.
  15. Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
  16. For each product on your list, follow these steps:
    1. Click the product name in the Currently installed programs list.
    2. Click Remove or Change/Remove.
    3. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the product.
  17. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  18. At the command prompt, type path c:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up; %path%, and then press ENTER.

    Note The "%" characters are part of the command. This syntax preserves the existing directory path.
  19. Type msizap.exe *! ALLPRODUCTS, and then press ENTER. This step removes all the Microsoft Windows Installer keys.
  20. Restart your computer, and then reinstall all the programs that you removed in step 16.
