SYMPTOMS

If you replace a compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM) with a blank compact disc-recordable (CD-R), and then start Windows Explorer, the files from the CD-ROM appear. Windows Explorer does not detect that the CD-ROM that was previously in the CD drive has been replaced with a blank CD-R.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.

If the CD-ROM contains software, the files for the software appear in Windows Explorer even though the software CD-ROM is no longer present in the CD drive. If you try to start the software from Windows Explorer, Windows Explorer tries to start the software. However, the software does not start.
