This article describes how to create an address list based on group membership.

In Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003, you can create multiple address lists based on various filter criteria so that organizations can create address lists for specific groups of people in the organization to use.

1. In Exchange System Manager, expand the Recipients container, and then right-click All Address Lists.
2. Click New, and then click Address List.
3. Type the name of your new address list, and then click Filter Rules.
4. In the Find drop-down list, make sure that Exchange Recipients is selected, and then click the Advanced tab.
5. Create a filter rule based on the group membership:
   
   
   1. Click Field, click User, and then click Member Of.
   2. On the Condition list box, click Is (exactly), and then in the Value box, type the distinguished name of the group for which you want to create a filter.
   Note that just adding the display name of the group does not produce the results that you want.
6. Click the Add button, click OK, and then click Finish.

NOTE: If you are not sure what the correct distinguished name for the group is, you can use ADSI Edit to locate the correct distinguished name. ADSI Edit is included in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Support Tools.

Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, or both Windows and Exchange. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.

To locate the distinguished name of the group:

1. Install Windows 2000 Support Tools.
2. Start ADSI Edit. To do so, click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows 2000 Support Tools, click Tools, and then click ADSI Edit.
3. Expand the domain naming context for the domain where the group resides.
4. Under the domain naming context, you see a list of all the Built-in containers and organizational units in the domain.
5. Locate the group for which you want to create a filter.
6. Right-click the group name, and then click Properties.
7. On the Attributes tab, in the Select a property to view drop-down list, select distinguishedName.
8. Select the value, and then copy the value. This is the fully qualified distinguished name required.
