SYMPTOMS

If you have persistent connections to network drives (for example, to drive Z) that are inaccessible for some reason, when you click Open on the File menu and then click the drop-down arrow on the Look In box, it may take several minutes before the lists actually drops down. The same long delay may occur with the Save In drop-down box in the Save or Save As dialog boxes.

The delay may occur if a remote drive is inaccessible. For example, the delay may occur when you are working offline with no network connection, after you unplug the computer's network cable, or if routing problems or other network issues cause communication problems with remote computers.

Programs (such as Notepad) that use common dialog boxes are affected. Other programs (such as Microsoft Office programs) that use similar drop-down lists in their dialog boxes may also be affected.

During the delay, the program is unresponsive and does not display an hourglass pointer. The program may seem to stop responding (hang) for several minutes, although the program does eventually respond.

CAUSE

Code was added in Windows 2000 to improve the presentation of the Look In (and similar) drop-down boxes. However, the new code generates several queries for each remembered connection to a remote network drive. If the network drives are inaccessible, the code makes several attempts to connect to the remote drive. Each attempt takes several seconds to time out.

If you have many persistent network drive connections, the cumulative delay from all of the timed-out connection attempts can add up to several minutes.

WORKAROUND

Instead of connecting a network drive (such as drive Z) to a network location (\\server\sharename), add the network location to My Network Places. My Network Places appears at the bottom of the Look In (and similar) lists. You can expand My Network Places without generating extra network traffic.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
