SYMPTOMS

If many peripheral devices are connected to the bus on a Windows 2000-based computer, some of the devices may not be initialized during the startup process. When this problem occurs, Device Manager shows the device as being present, but the device may be listed with an exclamation point.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Memory Manager cannot allocate a contiguous block of memory that is required for a particular device.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
