This article describes how to import data from Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5 into Entourage X.
You can use Entourage to import information that you created in other programs, including contacts, calendar events, notes, tasks, messages, rules, signatures, and account information.
NOTE: To use the following procedures, Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5 must be installed on the computer on which Entourage X is installed. You cannot import data directly from Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5 by using files from a network folder, a CD, a Zip Disk, or any other form of external media.

How to Import Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5 Data
When you start Entourage for the first time, the Entourage Setup Wizard prompts you to type your user information. You can then click one of the import options if you want to import data from another program or file, or follow these steps to import Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5 data directly. To import your data from Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5 into Entourage:
- On the File menu, click Import.
- In the Begin Import dialog box, click Import information from a program, and then continue to the next page.
- Click Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5, and then continue to the next page.
- Entourage X searches for the program that you selected. When it locates the correct program, you are prompted to find the Identities folder that is associated with the program from which you are importing. Complete either of the following procedures:
- If you are importing data from Entourage 2001, locate, and then click the identity folder in the following location:
NOTE: Your identity folder has the same name as the identity that you initially set up in Entourage.

NOTE: Depending on your Macintosh system settings, the Outlook Express Identities folder might be located in the Outlook Express folder or it might be located in the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder. If you cannot locate the Identities folder, use Apple Sherlock and search for the Identities folder.

- If you are importing data from Entourage 2001, locate, and then click the identity folder in the following location:
- Click Choose to start the import, and then click Finish when the import has completed.

You Want to Import Data from a Program Other Than Entourage 2001 or Outlook Express 5
You can import data from other programs, including Qualcomm Eudora (any version), Netscape Communicator version 4.0, Claris Emailer version 2.0 and version 3, Claris Organizer version 2.0, and Palm Desktop version 2.0 to 2.63, and Now Contact or Now Up-To-Date version 3.8 or later. You can also import data from a text file:
- Contacts:
You can import contact information from a text file that was exported from any program, including spreadsheet and database programs. The text file must be exported in tab-delimited or comma-delimited format. In such files, either a tab or a comma indicates the end of one data entry and the beginning of the next. See the documentation for the source program to learn how to export contacts to a text file.
Before you import the contact information, you can specify how data fields in the source program correspond to fields in Entourage. For example, if the source program contains a Business Phone field, you can specify that the data in that field is imported to a "work phone" field in Entourage.
- Messages:
You can import messages that have been saved as an MBOX-format text file. An MBOX-format text file is a single file that can contain many messages. When you import an MBOX-format text file to Entourage, the imported messages appear in a new folder in the Folders list.
To import contacts from a text file:
NOTE: To use this procedure, you must make sure that the text file you want to import is either tab-delimited or comma-delimited. Many programs have an Export command on the File menu you can use to export data in either a tab-delimited or comma-delimited format. A "delimiter" is a special character that sets off, or separates, individual items in a program or set of data. Typical special characters are commas, semi-colons, tabs, and paragraph marks.
- On the File menu, click Import.
- Follow the instructions in the Import Assistant.
After you select the file you want to import, the Import Contacts dialog box appears and displays data from the first contact record in the file:
- Fields that correspond to Microsoft Entourage fields appear opposite their counterparts in the Mapped fields box.
- Fields that do not correspond to Entourage fields appear in the Unmapped fields box.
- To use mapping settings you previously saved, click the settings on the Map fields using menu.
- Correct mapping errors by dragging fields from the Unmapped fields box to the Mapped fields box or the Mapped fields box.
- To view other contact records and verify that the data is mapped correctly, click Next or Prev.
- When the data is mapped correctly, click Import.
NOTE: If you replace a data field in the Mapped fields box with one from the Unmapped fields box, the replaced data moves to the Unmapped fields box. You can then assign that data to a different field. Fields that remain in the Unmapped fields box after you click Import are added to the Notes field in the contact.
Your Computer Stops Responding or You Receive an Error Message During the Import
