SUMMARY
This step-by-step article describes how to use the Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) Wizard to create a custom Connection Manager service profile.
Microsoft Connection Manager is a client dialer and connection tool that you can customize by using the CMAK Wizard. You can use the wizard to create service profiles that include the functionality and appearance that you want for your service. The wizard provides you with the ability to create a custom Connection Manager dialer for your remote network clients that they can use to connect to the network. The wizard builds a self-installing package that contains the service profile. You can then distribute the custom service profile to users so that they can install and run the custom version of Connection Manager.
You can specify the elements that you want Connection Manager to support, such as custom graphics, access numbers for dial-up connections, VPN connections, automatic programs that run during a connection, and other features that are specific to your service.
NOTE: If you want to incorporate custom graphics and programs, these elements must be created before you run the wizard.
Note that profiles that are generated with CMAK 1.2 are compatible with the following versions of Windows:
- Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional
- Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
- Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later and Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or later
How to Create a Custom Connection Manager Service Profile
To create a new custom service profile by using the CMAK wizard:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Connection Manager Administration Kit. Click Next.
- Click Create a new service profile, and then click Next.
- In the Service name box, type a name that you want to use for the service. This name is used to identify the service to users.
- In the File name box, type a name that you want to use for the service profile. This name is used for the files that are created by CMAK during the building of the service profile. Do not use any of the following characters in the file name:

- If you want to merge an existing service profile into the new profile, click the profile that you want to merge in the Existing service profile box, and then click Add. Click Next.
- If you want to add a line of support information to the Logon dialog box, type it in the Support information box. For example, For customer support, call 1-800-
xxx-xxxx. Click Next. - Specify whether or not the service requires a realm name, and then click Next.
- If you want to configure custom Dial-Up Networking entries, click Add. In the Phone-book Dial-Up Networking entry dialog box, type the phone-book Dial-Up Networking entry that you want.
NOTE: These entries must be exact matches of the Network and Dial-Up Connections entries that exist in the phone book. Or, if you want to set up a default entry for the service profile, this entry must match the service profile name.
Specify whether or not you want to assign specific Domain Name Service (DNS) or Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) server addresses or a Dial-Up Networking script, and then click OK. Click Next. - If you want to add Virtual Private Networking (VPN) support to the service profile, click to select the This service profile check box, and then click Next. Specify the server in the Server address box, specify whether or not you want to assign specific DNS or WINS server addresses and whether or not to use the same user credentials that are used for a dial-up connection, and then click OK. Click Next.
- Specify the connect actions that you want to include in the service profile, and then click Next.
- For each connect action that you selected in step 11, the CMAK Wizard displays a page in which you must specify the connect actions of that type that are run during the connection process.
In the Pre-Connect Actions, Pre-Tunnel Actions, Post-Connect Actions, or Disconnect Actions page (as appropriate), click Add, specify the program that you want to run in the Add/Edit Connect Actions dialog box that appears, and then click OK. Click Next. - If you want to specify a program to automatically run when users are connected, click Add, specify the program to run in the Add/Edit Auto-Applications dialog box, and then click OK. Click Next.
- Specify the bitmap file (.bmp) that you want to display in the Logon dialog box, and then click Next.
- Specify the bitmap file (.bmp) that you want to display in the Phone Book dialog box, and then click Next.
- To include a phone book in the service profile, click Browse, locate and click the phone book file (.pbk) that you want to include, and then click Open. Click Next.
NOTE: A corresponding region file (.pbr) must exist in the same folder where the phone book file resides. - If the Phone-Book Updates page is displayed, specify the phone book file (as appropriate) and URL, and then click Next.
- Specify the icons that you want to display for Connection Manager, and then click Next.
- If you want to customize the programs that appear on the context menu when users right-click the status-area icon, click Add, specify the programs that you want users to run from the context menu in the Add/Edit Status-Area-Icon Menu Command dialog box that appears, and then click OK. Click Next.
- Specify the Help file that you want to include in the service profile, and then click Next.
- If users do not already have Connection Manager version 1.2 installed, click to select the Include the Connection Manager 1.2 software check box to include it in the service profile. Click Next.
- If you want to include a license agreement in the service profile, specify the text (.txt) file that contains the license agreement, and then click Next.
- Specify any other additional files that you want to include in the service profile, and then click Next.
- Click Next to build the service profile.
The profile is created in the following location on the hard disk, wheredriveis the drive on which Windows is installed:drive:\Program Files\CMAK\Profiles\ServiceProfileFileName - Click Finish. The profile is ready to be deployed to client computers.
