Article ID: 317268

Article Last Modified on 2/12/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine
  • Microsoft .NET Framework Software Development Kit 1.0 Service Pack 2

This article was previously published under Q317268

SYMPTOMS

Installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) fails if all of the following conditions are true:

  • You are installing MSDE by using either the Release To Manufacturing (RTM) version or the Service Pack 1 (SP1) version.
  • You are running Setup for MSDE (Setup.exe) from a Terminal Services client and not at the computer that is running Terminal Services or Terminal Services (you are not at the Terminal server).
  • On the remote computer, Terminal Services is installed in Application Server mode.

During installation, you do not receive any errors messages or warnings; however, after the setup screen disappears, if you view Add/Remove Programs, you see that MSDE is not installed.

WORKAROUND

To successfully complete the MSDE installation, use one of the following workarounds:

  • Run MSDE Setup while you are logged on at the Terminal server and not from a client session.
  • On the remote computer, change the Application Server mode to Remote Administration mode. For additional information about how to change the installation mode of the terminal services, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Install MSDE by using the SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine Service Pack 2 (SP2). To retain the Terminal Services in Application Server mode while being able to install MSDE from a Terminal session client, obtain the full refresh version of the MSDE SP2 and copy it to the Terminal server, and then you can use a Terminal Session client and run the installation from the SP2 location. For additional information about how to obtain the full refresh version of MSDE SP2, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

  • The QuickStart Tutorials in the Microsoft .NET Framework SDK 1.1 includes the SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine(MSDE) RTM version. You experience this problem if you install MSDE from QuickStart samples. You can find this database engine in the following location on the CD ROM:

    CD ROM drive letter:\Program Files\Visual Studio.NET\FrameworkSDK\Samples\Setup\msde\instmsde.exe
