"Unknown Error (-2147024770)" Error Message Occurs When You Try to Install a Windows Update

SYMPTOMS

If you download and install an update from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, you may receive the following error message, where Name of component is the update that you are trying to install:

Name of component could not be installed because of an unknown error (-2147024770).

As a result of this error message, you cannot download and install the update.

CAUSE

This issue may occur in either of the following scenarios:

  • Internet Explorer is corrupted.


-or-

  • Certain system files are not registered properly.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, repair the installation of Internet Explorer:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Perform one of the following steps that is appropriate to your situation:
    • If Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools is displayed in the Add/Remove Programs list, click it, and then click Change/Remove.

      -or-
    • If Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools is not displayed in the Add/Remove Programs list:
      1. Click Start, and then click Run.
      2. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK:

        rundll32 setupwbv.dll,ie5maintenance

        NOTE: This command is case-sensitive. Make sure that you type it exactly as it appears.

  4. Click Repair Internet Explorer, and then click OK.
  5. Click Yes if you receive the Do you want to repair your current installation of Internet Explorer? message.
  6. Restart the computer, connect to the Windows Update Web site, and then download and install the updates that you want to use.

    If the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article is displayed again, reinstall Internet Explorer. To do so, run Internet Explorer Setup, and then restart the computer.
