MORE INFORMATION

Forwarding Messages

If you receive a message that you think will be of interest to a colleague, you can easily forward the message with just a few mouse clicks. Follow these steps to try it:

The Forward button

  1. With the Letter Sent To Al Pine message still displayed in its window, click the Forward button on the toolbar to display the Message window.

[GRAPHIC: Picture of forwarded message ] This time only the Subject edit box is filled in. Again, the original message appears below the insertion point, but the attachment icon is intact, indicating that the attachment will be sent as part of the forwarded message.

  1. For demonstration purposes, type your own e-mail address in the To box and click the Send button. Outlook changes the note in the original Message window to indicate that you forwarded the message.
  2. To view the two new messages, close the Message window and if necessary, click the Send/Receive button.

The arrow on the envelope icon of the original Al Pine message tells you that you have forwarded this message.

  1. Open both new messages to check them out.

Saving messages and attachments

To save a message for use in another program, select the message in the Inbox window, choose Save As from the File menu, navigate to the desired storage location, name the file, designate the file type, and click Save. You can save e-mail messages as RTF (RichText Format), Text Only, Outlook Template, or Message Format. (The Outlook Template file type allows you to use the file as a template for other Outlook messages. The Message Format file type is associated with Outlook, which opens the file if you double-click its filename.) To save an attachment to an e-mail message as a separate file, open the message, choose Save Attachments from the File menu, select the attachment's filename, and then designate the storage location for the file. (You can also right-click the attachment icon and choose Save As from the shortcut menu; or you can click the paper clip icon at the right end of the preview pane's title bar, select the file to open it in the appropriate application, and then save it in the usual way.) To save an attachment without opening the message, simply select the message header in the workspace and choose Save Attachments from the File menu.
