SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall your sound device in Device Manager, the speaker icon may not re-appear in the system tray (the area on the right side of the taskbar) when the sound device is re-enumerated.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the system tray does not properly refresh.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue:

  1. Open the Sounds and Audio Devices tool in Control Panel, and then verify that the Place volume icon in taskbar check box on the Volume tab is selected. If it is not, click to select this check box, and then click OK. If the issue no longer occurs, skip the remaining steps. If the issue still occurs, continue to the next step.
  2. Log the current user off, and then log back on. If the issue no longer occurs, skip the remaining steps. If the issue still occurs, continue to the next step.
  3. Open the Sounds and Audio Devices tool in Control Panel, click to clear the Place volume icon in taskbar check box on the Volume tab, and then click OK. Open the Sounds and Audio Devices tool in Control Panel again, click to select the Place volume icon in taskbar check box on the Volume tab, and then click OK.
