Warning Message Does Not Appear When You Close a Windows 2000 Terminal Services Session While a 16-Bit Program Is Running

PSS ID Number: 308014

Article Last Modified on 4/30/2003

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you try to close a Remote Administration Mode Terminal Services session while a 16-bit MS-DOS console program is running in a command window, the following warning message appears on both the server and the remote workstation:

Windows cannot end the program. It may need more time to complete an operation.

However, if Terminal Services is running in Application Mode and you close the session, the warning message does not appear and the program is closed immediately on both the server and the remote workstation. This behavior can result in lost data if the Terminal Services session closes before the 16-bit MS-DOS console program has been closed.

WORKAROUND

To work around the problem, close the 16-bit MS-DOS console program before you close the Terminal Services session. If you have to restart an applications server while clients are connected using Terminal Services, use Terminal Services Manager to send a message to all connected users:

  1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Terminal Services Manager.

The Users tab lists all users connected to the Terminal server.

  1. Click the first user, and then click the last user in the list while pressing the SHIFT key to select all users in the list.

Note To select individual users press the CTRL key.

  1. After all the users you want are selected, click Send Message on the Actions menu.
  2. Type a message title and a message, and then click OK to send the message.

Additionally, you can either run the net send command or use e-mail messaging to notify users to close all open programs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
