SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start Microsoft Internet Explorer or Microsoft Outlook Express, or attempt to shut down your computer after disconnecting from the Internet, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Monitor caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Kernel32.dll.

-OR-

Windows Sockets Initialization failed

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Encompass Monitor (EncMonitor) service is installed on your computer, and it conflicts with another program or service that is installed on your computer. The EncMonitor service is in your Startup folder, and starts when you start your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the System Configuration utility (Msconfig.exe) to remove EncMonitor from the Startup group. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Startup tab.

The Startup tab lists items that load at startup from the Startup folder and the registry. You can select the configuration files that you do not want to load when you restart the computer.

  1. Click to clear the EncMonitor check box, and then click OK.
  2. Click Yes to the Do you want to restart your computer now? message.

MORE INFORMATION

The Encompass Monitor service may be preinstalled on some computers. This service is in your computer's Startup group, loads when you start your computer, and then starts Monitor.exe. Monitor.exe performs the same function as the performance monitor Alert and Logging utility.
