INTRODUCTION

This article describes the support that is available for Distributed File System (DFS) in the Windows Preinstall Environment (WinPE).

MORE INFORMATION

Stand-alone DFS roots are supported in version 1.1 of WinPE. Active Directory integrated DFS roots are still not supported in version 1.1 of WinPE.

This feature is available in the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

DFS is not supported in version 1.0 of WinPE. Therefore, you cannot use WinPE 1.0 to access DFS shares directly. To make sure that you have access to your distribution source files, use one of the following methods:

  • If you know the direct path (for example, Servername\Sharename) for your source files that are being redirected by DFS, use the direct path instead of the DFS sharepoint to map a drive in WinPE.
  • Put your distribution source files on a non-DFS volume.

Note When you use a computer that is running Windows XP, you can locate a DFS sharepoint and view the properties for a folder to find the exact Servername\Sharename where the folders and files are located.

To locate the share where folders and files from a DFS sharepoint are located:

  1. Locate the folder (the DFS sharepoint). To do this, click Start, click Run, and then open the folder that contains the source files.
  2. In Windows Explorer, right-click the folder, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the DFS tab, and then note the location where the Servername\Sharename\foldernames are located in the Referral List box.
  4. In WinPE, use the Servername\Sharename to map a drive by using the Net USE command and gain access to your source files that are located in that location.

Note You must have permissions to the share. On the DFS tab under the folder properties is a Windows XP only feature, Windows 2000 does not have this feature. Therefore, you must know the exact Servername\Sharename that is being redirected by DFS to access it in WinPE.
