SUMMARY

This article explains how to download and install an update to an administrative installation of Microsoft Office 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

Preparing an Administrative Installation for an Update

Before you apply an update to your administrative installation, you must first apply the SR-1/SR-1a update to your administrative installation.

For additional information about how to install SR-1/SR-1a, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

257983 OFF2000: How to Obtain and Apply the SR-1/SR-1a Update to Administrative Installations

Downloading the Administrator Update

To download the update for an administrative installation of Office 2000, follow these steps:

  1. Using your Web browser, connect to the following Microsoft Web site:

NOTE: The Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit web site contains a comprehensive set of information, tools, and converters designed to help you deploy, support, and maintain Microsoft Office 2000.

  2. Click the link to download the file.
  3. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  4. Click Save.
  5. In Windows Explorer, double-click the downloaded file. If you are prompted to extract the contents of the update to a new folder, click Yes.
  6. In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\adminUpdate and then click OK. If you are prompted to create the folder, click Yes.

Installing the Administrator Update

NOTE: You must run this command from a computer on which the Windows Installer was previously installed.

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following command

    msiexec /a Admin Path\MSI File /p C:\adminUpdate\MSP File SHORTFILENAMES=1

where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office 2000 (for example, C:\Office2000); MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office 2000 product (for example, Data1.msi); and MSP File is the name of the administrative installation update.

NOTE: If you do not want the Office 2000 Administrative Installation and the End User License Agreement dialog boxes to appear, append /qb+ to the preceding command line.
  3. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Administrative Mode dialog box, click Next.

NOTE: You do not have to type your CD Key or company name in the Microsoft Office 2000 Administrative Mode dialog box.
  4. Click I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and then click Next.
  5. Click Install Now. When installation is complete, click OK.
  6. If the update contains multiple MSP files, or you want to apply multiple updates to your network administrative installation, repeat steps 1 through 4 for the remaining MSP files.

After completing the update to the administrative installation point, update the workstations that were originally installed from this administrative installation. To do this, see the "Updating the Workstations" section later in this article. Any new installations that you run from this administrative installation point will include the update.

WARNING: Any workstation that was installed from this administrative installation point before you installed the update, cannot use this administrative installation for repairing Office or adding new features. To do this you must update the workstations first.

Updating the Workstations

Run Setup.exe from the updated administrative installation of Office to interactively update a workstation.

-or-

Use the following method to update a workstation on which Office 2000 was already installed from your administrative installation point. You must perform these steps for each workstation.

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following command

    msiexec /i Admin Path\MSI File REINSTALL=Feature List REINSTALLMODE=vomus

where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office 2000 (for example, C:\Office2000); MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office 2000 product (for example, Data1.msi); and Feature List is the list of feature names (case sensitive) that need to be reinstalled for the update. If you want to reinstall all features, use REINSTALL=ALL rather than REINSTALL=Feature List.
  3. If you receive a message indicating that Setup completed successfully, click OK.
  4. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.

Updating a Workstation with Multiple Updates

You can apply multiple updates to your administrative installation at one time and then update the workstations once for all these updates. You can follow the procedure in the "Updating the Workstations" section of this article. Also, you can combine all the feature names for the REINSTALL property, or include all the features by using the following command line

msiexec /i Admin Path\MSI File REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus

where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office 2000 (for example, C:\Office2000) and MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office 2000 product (for example, Data1.msi).
