SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install IntelliPoint software, your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the system Temp folder is full or contains corrupted files.

RESOLUTION

To empty the Temp folder and then install IntelliPoint software, follow the steps corresponding to your version of Windows.

Microsoft Windows 95

  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. Click Restart the Computer in MS-DOS mode, and then click OK.
  3. Type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:

    cd temp
    del *.tmp

  4. At the command prompt, type win, and then press ENTER. Press and hold down the SHIFT key until the Windows startup sequence is complete.
  5. Turn off any anti-virus or disk tool programs installed on the computer.

    For information about how to turn off these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.
  6. Quit all running programs except Windows Explorer and Systray. To do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click the program that you want to quit, and then click End Task. If you receive a message that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again. Repeat this step to quit all programs except Windows Explorer and Systray.
  7. Double-click My Computer on the desktop. On the View menu, click Options, click the View tab, and then click to select the Show all files checkbox. Click OK.
  8. In the My Computer dialog box, double-click C:.
  9. Double-click the Program Files folder, and then double-click the Common Files folder.
  10. Right-click the InstallShield folder, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm deletion.
  11. Insert the Microsoft IntelliPoint Setup compact disc into your CD-ROM drive, and then follow the Setup Wizard instructions on your screen.

    If the Setup Wizard does not appear, follow these steps. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type drive:setup where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
    3. Follow the Setup Wizard instructions on your screen.
  12. Restart the computer normally, and then turn on any anti-virus or disk tool programs installed on the computer. For information about how to turn on these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.

Windows 98

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Config.sys File
    • Process Autoexec.bat File
    • Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
    • Process Win.ini File
    • Load Startup Group Items
  4. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.
  5. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
  6. In the Drives box, click C:, or the drive on which Windows is installed.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click to select the Temporary files check box.
  9. Click OK, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  10. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. On the View menu, click Folder Options, click the View tab, and then click to select the Show all files check box. Click OK.
  11. In the My Computer dialog box, double-click C:.
  12. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  13. Double-click the Common Files folder.
  14. Right-click the InstallShield folder, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm deletion.
  15. Insert the Microsoft IntelliPoint Setup compact disc into your CD-ROM drive, and then follow the Setup Wizard instructions on your screen.

    NOTE: If the Setup Wizard does not appear, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type drive:setup where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
    3. Follow the Setup Wizard instructions on your screen.
  16. Click Start, and then click Run.
  17. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  18. On the General tab, click Normal Startup, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective startup.
  3. Click to clear all of the check boxes under Selective startup.
  4. On the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box.
  5. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes. After the computer restarts, click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

    IMPORTANT: Look closely at the General tab to ensure that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared. Proceed to step 6 if none of the check boxes are selected. If you see an unavailable or gray check box, your computer is not truly "clean-booted" and you may need assistance from the manufacturer of the program so that a check mark appears in Msconfig.
  6. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
  7. In the Drives box, click C:, or the drive on which Windows is installed.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click to select the Temporary files check box.
  10. Click OK, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  11. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, click the View tab, and then click to select the Show hidden files and folders checkbox. Click OK.
  12. In the My Computer dialog box, double-click C:.
  13. Double-click the Program Files folder.
  14. Double-click the Common Files folder.
  15. Right-click the InstallShield folder, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm deletion.
  16. Insert the Microsoft IntelliPoint Setup compact disc into your CD-ROM drive, and then follow the Setup Wizard instructions on your screen.

    NOTE:If the Setup Wizard does not start, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type drive:setup where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
    3. Follow the Setup Wizard instructions on your screen.
  17. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  18. On the General tab, click Normal startup.
  19. Click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
