SYMPTOMS

After you try to change the button assignments for any one of the Microsoft pointing devices that are listed in the "Applies to" section, you find that all the button assignments are reset to default mode. You cannot change the button assignments for your pointing device.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Microsoft IntelliPoint driver file Ipfilter.sys is missing or is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

Start Microsoft Windows in safe mode

  1. Close all the programs.
  2. Restart the computer. To do this on a Windows Vista-based computer, click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], click the arrow next to the Lock button, and then click Restart.


To restart a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, click Start, click Shutdown, click Restart, and then click OK.

  1. As the computer restarts, keep pressing the F8 key to display the Windows Startup menu.
  2. Click Safe Mode.
  3. On the desktop, click OK when you receive the safe mode warning message.

Note It typically takes longer to start in safe mode.

Look for ghost devices in Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager. To do this in Windows Vista, click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type devmgmt.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.


[GRAPHIC: User Account Control permission] If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

To open Device Manager in Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

  1. On the View menu, click Devices by type.
  2. Expand the list.
  3. Look for any exact duplicates or additional devices that should not be there.

Remove and reinstall the IntelliPoint software

  1. View the list of programs that are installed on the computer. To view the list of programs that are installed on a Windows Vista-based computer, open the Programs and Features item in Control Panel. To do this, click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], type appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.


To view the list of programs that are installed on a Windows XP-based computer, click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.

  1. Remove Microsoft IntelliPoint. To do this in Windows Vista, click Microsoft IntelliPoint, and then click Uninstall/Change.


[GRAPHIC: User Account Control permission] If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the program.

To remove IntelliPoint from a Windows XP-based computer, click Microsoft IntelliPoint, click Add/Remove, click Finish, and then click OK.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Reinstall the IntelliPoint software.

If this method does not resolve the issue, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Windows Vista

  1. Click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type devmgmt.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

  2. Double-click Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click the Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device, and then click Properties.

    The IntelliMouse pointing device is listed as follows:

  4. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
  5. Follow the directions on the screen to complete the wizard.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  3. Double-click the Mice and other pointing devices branch to expand it.
  4. Right-click the Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device, and then click Properties.

    The IntelliMouse pointing device is listed as follows:

  5. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
  6. In the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.
  7. Click Display a list of the known drivers, and then click Next.
  8. Select the Microsoft mouse driver that ends with (IntelliPoint), and then click Next.
  9. Click Next to confirm that you have selected the correct driver.
  10. Click Finish to complete the installation of the new driver.
