SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to hibernate a computer that is running Windows XP, you may receive the following message:
When you install Windows XP on a computer that is not in Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) mode (by using a standard Hardware Abstraction Layer [HAL]) and you enable the hibernate option, the computer does not turn off (enter an S4 sleep state) as expected.
CAUSE
This behavior most likely occurs on computers that have a standard PC HAL.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, you can upgrade to an ACPI HAL. However, use caution when you upgrade because there are several factors that determine if a PC is capable of supporting ACPI. Make sure that you back up and verify your data.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
