SYMPTOMS

If you are using Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, you can use Internet Mail Service to set the Message Archival setting on the Diagnostics Logging tab to archive the messages that are sent by using Internet Mail Service. You can configure the same functionality in Exchange 2000. For additional information about how to archive messages that are sent by using Internet Mail Service, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

However, if you configure this functionality, the archived messages (which have an .eml file name extension) look different from the messages that you send by using Microsoft Outlook. For example, if you used Outlook to send a message that has an attachment, if you use Microsoft Outlook Express to open the archived message, the message does not display the attachment.

CAUSE

If you use the default settings for the archive sink, the messages that are sent by using Outlook in MAPI mode are archived by using Transport-Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF). You cannot use Outlook Express to view the attachments of a message that is in this format.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, change the default settings for the Archive Sink utility to configure message archival for post categorization:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate the Enable PostCat value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\ArchiveSink\1

  3. On the Edit menu, click DWORD, type 1, and then click OK.
  4. Quit Registry Editor.

After you complete this procedure, two messages are archived for post categorization for each message that you send by using Outlook in MAPI mode. One of the messages is converted from TNEF; therefore, you can use Outlook Express to view the attachments of this message.
