SYMPTOMS

You open a workbook that previously had smart tags in it in Microsoft Excel. When you do this, the workbook data may no longer be recognized by smart tags.

CAUSE

The behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You save the workbook in a format that does not support smart tags.
  • You open the workbook on a computer that does not have the smart tag recognizer enabled or installed.

The following formats do not support embedded smart tags:

  • Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook
  • Microsoft Excel 4.0 Workbook
  • Microsoft Excel 4.0 Worksheet
  • Microsoft Excel 3.0 Worksheet
  • Microsoft Excel 2.1 Worksheet
  • Symbolic Link (SYLK)
  • All text (.txt) formats, including formatted text (.prn)
  • All Comma Separated Value (.csv) formats
  • All Lotus 1-2-3 (.wk*) formats
  • All DBASE (.dbf) formats
  • Quattro Pro/DOS (.wq1)
  • Data Interchange Format (.dif)


RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method for your situation.

Method 1: Save the workbook in a format that supports smart tags

Save the workbook in one of the following formats:

  • Microsoft Excel Workbook
  • Microsoft Excel 97-2002 & 5.0/95 Workbook
  • Web Page
  • Web Archive
  • XML Spreadsheet

These formats support smart tags.

Method 2: Reapply the smart tags

Reapply the smart tags on a computer on which the smart tag recognizer is installed. To do this, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of Excel that you are running.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007

  1. Open the workbook.
  2. Click the Microsoft Office Button[GRAPHIC: Microsoft Office Button ], and then click Excel Options.
  3. In the Excel Options dialog box, click Proofing, and then click AutoCorrect Options.
  4. On the Smart Tags tab, click to select the Label data with smart tags check box.
  5. Click to select the Embed smart tags in this workbook check box.
  6. Click Check Workbook.
  7. Click Yes, and then click OK two times.
  8. Click the Microsoft Office Button[GRAPHIC: Microsoft Office Button ], and then click Save As.
  9. In the Save as type list, click one of the file formats that are listed in Method 1.
  10. Click Save.

Microsoft Excel 2002 and Microsoft Office Excel 2003

  1. Open the workbook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  3. On the Smart Tags tab, click to select the Label data with smart tags check box.
  4. Click to select the Embed smart tags in this workbook check box.
  5. Click Check Workbook.
  6. On the File menu, click Save As.
  7. In the Save as type list, click one of the file formats that are listed in Method 1.
  8. Click Save.
